USA and United Kingdom warn of imminent Russian global cyber attack

The alert is not related to the suspected chemical weapons attack in a town in Syria that prompted a US -led military strike over the weekend targeting facilities of the Russian-backed Syrian government, Joyce said.

Inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) went to Syria last week to inspect the Douma site but have yet to gain access to the town, which is now under government control after the rebels withdrew.

The US, France and the United Kingdom responded to the suspected attack by launching missiles on Saturday that they said targeted Syrian chemical weapons production facilities. "It is our concern that they may have tampered with it with the intent of thwarting the efforts of the OPCW Fact-Finding Mission to conduct an effective investigation".

The OPCW inspectors will not assign blame for attacks.

Russia has heavily criticized the US, UK and France for launching airstrikes against Russia-ally Syria, while Washington and London have accused Moscow of responsibility for a nerve-agent attack against a former Russian double agent in southern England. "Russia and Syria must cooperate".

Syria joined the OPCW, the organisation tasked with monitoring adherence to the 1997 convention, in 2013 after a sarin gas attack that killed hundreds of people in Ghouta.

Meanwhile a spokesman for President Vladimir Putin said the allegations were "groundless", adding Moscow favoured "an impartial investigation".

Moscow blamed the delay on the Western air strikes.

The strikes have ratcheted up worldwide tension, as the USA and Russian Federation exchanged threats of retaliation.

Ryabkov's comments on Monday came in response to remarks made by Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations, who said on Sunday that Washington will impose new economic sanctions on Russian Federation for their support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

They said Syrian air defences intercepted most of the missiles but the Pentagon claims no missiles were engaged.

Her office said she planned to tell them the strikes were "in Britain's national interest" and were carried out to stop further suffering from chemical weapons attacks.
