Tapper on Cohen repping Hannity: 'Go home 2018, you're drunk'

Tapper on Cohen repping Hannity: 'Go home 2018, you're drunk'

Cohen's lawyers were required by a federal judge in NY to disclose the names of his clients Monday as part of an argument over attorney-client privilege and how it applies to records seized from Cohen last week by the FBI.

The judge said she could not decide about how seriously to treat Cohen's and Trump's claims about attorney-client privilege unless she knew what clients Cohen has been representing.

Hannity is a conservative television host known for passionately advocating for Trump on his Fox News show, and sometimes receiving public praise from Trump in return.

Fox News quickly pivoted away from coverage of the Cohen hearing and aired stories about Syria and Barbara Bush's illness. "I never retained him in a traditional sense".

"I have occasionally had brief discussions with him about legal questions about which I wanted his input and perspective", Hannity wrote in the statement.

Hannity said none of the conversations he had with Cohen, which he "assumed" were confidential, involved "any matter between me and a third-party".

Prosecutors suggested in their filing that while Cohen "holds himself out as a practicing attorney", he is actually exaggerating the extent of his work in an attempt to cast a wide net of attorney-client privilege over the records seized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. McKay stressed that the team of government lawyers who would review the seized material would be "walled off" from their colleagues, like himself, who are pursuing the criminal inquiry against Cohen.

"They're hoping for the worst when it relates to any conservative", he said.

Prosecutor Thomas McKay told the judge during a sidebar session on Friday, "This is a fast-moving investigation". For seven, the letter said, the work "appears to be providing strategic advice and business consulting, for which privilege would not attach".

The search warrant authorizing the raid indicated prosecutors were looking into potential violations of bank fraud, wire fraud, and campaign finance violations, sources told CNN.

Cohen has acknowledged paying pornographic actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 for what her lawyer said was silence about her alleged liaison with Trump shortly before the 2016 election. The attorneys said in the filing that Cohen represented three clients in the past year: Trump; Elliot Broidy, the Republican fundraiser for whom Cohen helped facilitate a $1.6 million payment to a Playboy playmate; and a third person.

Trump denies any sexual relationship with Daniels.
