Kendrick Lamar wins Pulitzer Prize

The superstar SoCal rapper has won the Pulitzer Prize for music with his brilliant "DAMN." album.

DAMN. was nominated for multiple Grammys, and took home the Grammy for Best Rap Album.

The global reporting prize was awarded to Reuters reporters Clare Baldwin, Andrew R.C. Marshall and Manuel Mogato "for relentless reporting that exposed the brutal killing campaign behind Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs", the Pulitzer board said.

The 2017 Pulitzer Prize for music went to "Angel's Bone", an opera by composer Du Yun. The victor receives a $15,000 prize.

Macron said in a statement that a target of the strike was the Syrian government's "clandestine chemical arsenal". Saturday's strikes on Syria were the first major military operation since Macron's election in May past year .

Previously, the Pulitzer board has given out special honors to famous musicians Bob Dylan, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Hank Williams, but never a rapper and never in the music category.

DAMN. itself is - particularly when considered next to the looser, jazz-rooted musicality of Lamar's album To Pimp A Butterfly from 2015 - a thoroughly modern document of hip-hop's present and near future, in both sound and narrative scope.

This marks the first time that Reuters has won two prizes in one year.

"Both of these pieces", Lamar said of the album's duality, "are who I am".
