Commonwealth Games organisers apologise for 'shameful' closing ceremony

The next edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2022 will be held in Birmingham and this will be the third time that England has hosted the Games.

The decision to leave the athletes out of the broadcast earned the ire of fans, politicians and even Channel Seven's on-air hosts, sparking an early morning apology from Games boss Peter Beattie.

Numerous athletes including Usain Bolt also departed the stadium early before the ceremony ended.

"We're becoming more relevant than we've ever been before and what we're trying to do is ensure that everybody else in the world sees exactly what we're trying to do", she said in an interview.

"I'm furious. Actually, wrecking a tradition that is so important, " Griggs said.

"I will engage with everyone when there is a real solid circumstances to blow up".

"I want to wake up and not feel ruined".

Aminat Adeniyi won gold in the women's wrestling 62kg freestyle Nordic, while Melvin Bibo and Mercy Genesis both added silver and bronze to the wrestling medals pool.

"We hate losing. We're pretty disappointed", Walsh said.

The ceremony has been slammed for snubbing the athletes and denying them the recognition for their achievements during the 11 days of competition.

This is the Commonwealth Games, where Paralympic athletes are not just included but fully integrated in the teams, and their events in the programme.

The broadcast of the ceremony was pretty conspicuously missing the usual footage of athletes and flagbearers entering the stadium, which meant we didn't get to see wheelchair racing gold medallist Kurt Fearnley carry the Australian flag for the last time before retiring. "We got that wrong", he tweeted on Monday. They made decisions not to have athletes enter the stadium.

However, Mr Beattie told Sunrise that the reason for leaving the athletes out was based on the competitors' welfare.

Beattie also conceded speeches went for too long.

Most importantly, it is a wake up call for all the senior pros. that they no longer can take their places in the national team for granted, as these youngsters are snapping at their heels and how. "But I felt good that Chad acknowledged my input from the past".

"It hasn't really lived up to expectations and I've got to say it's about the only thing they got wrong, but they did get it wrong tonight". "But it also needs to be legitimate sport and I think the performances here speak for themselves".
