"He is undergoing further tests as a precaution and we all wish him a speedy recovery".

Hawkins held a lead of nearly two minutes after two hours of running in blazing sun and temperatures of 28 degrees Celsius (82F) on the roads of the Gold Coast when he was unable to continue, weaving across the road before collapsing.

TV commentators and viewers blasted Hawkins' wait for medical assistance, while many also criticised the bystanders who took pictures. "Callum Hawkins must be in an ambulance and he's lying flat on the road".

"Where on earth is the help?" You can not just wait at the finish line - people get in distress further down the course.

"Medics were shockingly slow to get there and then to act when they did. I think it's disgraceful".
