Rare Reveals Sea of Thieves' Content Roadmap

Those more embedded in the Sea of Thieves forums are privy to these conversations, but others are possibly just now learning about these plans.

Content updates will add major new features alongside new items & mechanics, with new goals and rewards.

Sea of Thieves has been receiving weekly updates since its launch last month, bringing balance changes and bug fixes, but Rare revealed today that there are some major content drops in the horizon, arriving free of charge to all players. Those that take part in the event will be able to earn some unique rewards as well. Similar to The Hungering Deep, both of these updates will also include new gameplay mechanics for players, new AI threats to challenge and new unique rewards to claim.

In Forsaken Shores, players will be introduced to a perilous new part of the world to explore and plunder.

The Hungering Deep, the game's first content update, will be released in May along with a new AI threat and event. Possibly more exciting for players is a new ship type being introduced to Sea of Thieves.

The pirate life doesn't end in May, but kicks off one of three content updates with the rest to follow this summer.

Rare says that the first content update for Sea of Thieves will be called The Hungering Deep, bringing a risky new AI threat to the seas that will force crews to work together.

Looking further down the line, this summer will see a couple of updates with the Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores updates.

The Hungering Deep brings a new AI threat to the world, that crews will have to work together to discover and defeat as part of a unique event.

Rare is also deprioritizing the development of some previously announced features: pets, which will let players own parrots, cats and monkeys; and ship captaincy, a system that would allow legendary pirates to become captains of customizable ships. Expect plans to continue to be fluid but always with the goals listed above as a guiding principle.
