No burning Thursday! High temps, winds prompt Red Flag Warning

The National Weather Service has posted a Red Flag Warning for most of Central Virginia from noon until 8 p.m. today, meaning no burning should happen in that time frame.

Wind gusts of 15 to 25 miles per hour will be common throughout southside Virginia, and into the Piedmont of North Carolina this afternoon. The campfire advisory remains in effect until the Red Flag Warning ends. Take caution to still avoid outdoor burning.

Farther south toward the Virginia North Carolina Border, winds speeds will be less, but still pose a concern, especially during the peak heating part of the afternoon when leaf litter and brush will be the driest. State officials are warning that "low relative humidity, high winds, and spiking heat will bring extreme fire danger to Colorado, specifically along the Front Range and the southern portion of Colorado".

Friday evening's forecast is calling for mostly clear skies, with a low around 37. It will still be very gusty on Friday (right now we have a Wind Alert Level One, meaning we could see gusts to 30-40 mph), but with high humidity levels, fire danger should go down. Any fires that start have the potential of spreading rapidly.

Mountain highs will reach the 40s and 50s, with clouds building in the afternoon when snow showers are possible.
