Lewis Hamilton handed five-place grid penalty for gearbox change

Vettel snatched an opportunistic win from Hamilton in the season-opening race in Australia two weeks ago to take the early championship lead.

"The Ferrari was quicker today", said Bottas.

The result means that Hamilton, who has won the Bahrain GP twice in 2014 and 2015, will serve a five-place grid penalty in the main race.

Max Verstappen crashed on the exit of Turn Two, losing control as his vehicle slewed across the track and into the barriers. The duo didn't have much space because Fernando Alonso's McLaren was on the inside, with Verstappen running over the Mercedes' front wing.

In avoiding the McLaren driver, he inadvertently banged wheels with a helpless Hamilton.

He place him a whopping 0.525 seconds away from second-placed Max Verstappenalong with his RedBull team partner Daniel Ricciardo that a additional 0.059 seconds adrift in third.

Sebastian Vettel wins Bahrain Grand Prix after mechanic hit by Ferrari auto
With Hamilton starting from far back, he needs to still be wary of his teammate Raikkonen, Bottas and Ricciardo. But disaster struck as Raikkonen's auto was dropped from the jack before the left-rear wheel had been changed.

Back inside the top ten the drama continued as Magnussen took on Gasly for fifth, and Hamilton took on Hulkenberg, Alonso and Esteban Ocon for sixth - triple overtake! His moment of magic arrived moments later when he picked off three cars. Ultimately it wasn't enough though for the Finn, who only made a half move into Turn 1 with the assistance of the DRS. The race was on. Everyone else was on the supersofts, with Vettel pumping in a brilliant lap to go quickest. His teammate Kimi Raikkonen was second as Mercedes struggled to find the pace. It was a ploy by Mercedes to get their man to the end of the race without having to stop again.

"These tires were done, done, in the last 10 laps", a jubilant Vettel told his team over the radio after crossing the line. Like Bottas, Hamilton was put onto the more durable medium tyres.

In a dominant session for the Italian team under the Sakhir circuit floodlights, Vettel claimed the 51st pole of his career ahead of what will be the four-times world champions' 200th start. Had Mercedes pulled off a masterstroke?

Raikkonen came in for his second tire change of the race after 36 of 57 laps and was given the green light to go despite work still continuing on the rear left tire. Ferrari had both cars on the podium with Kimi Raikkonen in third, while Mercedes' second driver Valtteri Bottas had to settle for eighth in Australia, following a qualifying crash and grid penalty. He clipped a mechanic upon leaving the pit-box.

Second-placed Bottas started to rapidly close the gap on Vettel after lap 50 as his tyres came into their own against the leader's swiftly wearing set, but he ultimately fell just short - beaten in the end by less than a second.

Ferrari totally botched Raikkonen's second tire change.
