Sagan sprints to Paris-Roubaix victory, Goolaerts hospitalised following crash

The 22-year-old fell on the second set of cobbles in the prestigious 257km one-day classic in northern France.

The pair stayed away to the finish in the outdoor velodrome in Roubaix, with Sagan kicking clear on the final bend.

I think Paris-Roubaix has to be the toughest race because you have the terrain - there are anything between 52 and 55 kilometres of cobbles over the course of around 260 kilometres.

"I feel awesome, I'm so exhausted, but I was involved in no crashes, had no flat tyres and I just kept going", said Sagan, who at one point was caught on camera using an Allen key to make some on board repairs as he cycled along at more than 40km/h.

Michael Goolaerts of Belgium was involved in a crash and was taken to hospital amid unconfirmed reports he suffered a cardiac arrest.

Last week's Tour of Flanders victor Niki Terpstra was third at 57sec and 2017 champion Greg Van Avermaet fourth at 1:34.

"Sagan is an angel and a devil in the same person - an angel because he took me with him and a devil because I had to go man-to-man with him".

Multiple fatalities after truck collides with Canadian junior hockey team bus
The team had been heading to a Saskatchewan junior hockey league playoff game against the Nipawin Hawks, officials said. Among the dead are Broncos head coach Darcy Haugan , team captain Logan Schatz and radio announcer Tyler Bieber.

His Veranda's Willems-Crelan team tweeted after the race: "No update on Michael Goolaerts yet".

They later appealed for people to refrain from speculation as they wait for an update on his situation.

Sagan latched onto an earlier break and soon made up a three-man group alongside Belgian Jelle Wallays and Dillier.

"It's really nice to win this race with the world champion jersey".

The 257-kilometer race is also known as the "Hell of the North" because of its treacherous profile including 54.5 kilometers of cobblestones spread out over 29 sectors.

"I broke a finger recently and didn't think I'd make Paris-Roubaix because of that", said Dillier.
