Ohtani Goes Deep in Third Straight Game for Angels

He is the first player to hit three home runs between a pair of pitching starts since Babe Ruth did it in 1919. He performed poorly in spring training but has exceeded expectations so far this season.

Los Angeles Angels rookie Shohei Ohtani hit his third homer of the season Friday night in his first at-bat against the Oakland Athletics.

Stephen Piscotty gave the A's an early lead in the second inning, doubling off JC Ramirez to bring in Matt Chapman for the first run of the game. Then he smacked a 3-run shot in a blowout win over Cleveland, and he delivered a 2-run home run off Corey Kluber in the following game. Ohtani isn't expected to start at DH on Saturday, as he'll be rested the day ahead of his scheduled Sunday start on the mound.

Kendall Graveman (0-1, 8.10 ERA) will make his third start of the season for Oakland.

And with two games left for Cleveland, the Cavs are in fourth place with a two game lead over the 5th place Indiana Pacers. Philadelphia entered Friday night's game just a half game behind Cleveland for the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference.

"I saw some signs of good things and feel like I'm really close to putting it all together", Graveman told the San Jose Mercury News after the game. Jed Lowrie hit a solo home run in the first - he singled with two outs in the ninth, but was caught taking a wide turn around first for the final out.

After a poor performance all around by A's pitchers the night before, it looked like Triggs could have been headed down that same path in the fourth when he surrendered a two-run homer to Justin Upton.

It marked Ohtani's third straight game with a home run as the Angels won 13-9. Oakland used four relievers on Thursday, six on Friday and three more on Saturday. "I think it's just a couple of pitches that are getting the innings long".
