The results are expected to be declared by afternoon.

In Bihar's Araria, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress are pitted against the BJP-Janata Dal (United) alliance and it's the first big test for Nitish Kumar after he walked out of the Grand Alliance past year to team up with the BJP.

The RJD-Congress alliance is upbeat after a good voter turnout in Araria, Bhabua and Jehanabad and expressed confidence that the alliance candidates will win.

Sarfaraz Alam was leading as vote count began in the morning.

Phulpur bypoll results 2018: Samajwadi Party's Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel leading by 12,231 votes with 99,557 votes, BJP's Kaushlendra Singh Patel second with 87,326 votes after eight round of counting. After the by-election for three seats in Bihar, the preparations to elect candidates for the vacant seat has been completed in Araria. It is the first major test for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar since he walked-out of the Grand Alliance previous year. Eyeing the big chunk of Dalit voters here, the Congress had got former Lok Sabha Speaker and Dalit leader Meira Kumar to campaign. The bye-election to the Araria seat was necessitated after the death of sitting RJD lawmaker Mohd Taslimuddin. And according to the latest trends, RJD seems to retain the seats, even as BJP was leading in Araria initially.

The contest is mainly between RJDs Sarafaraz Alam, Taslimuddin's son, and BJPs Pradip Singh, who had won the seat in 2009 and finished runners-up in 2014. His wife Rinki Pandey is contesting on the BJP ticket.

The current bypoll equations are also likely to reflect in the seat-sharing between the BJP and the JD (U) for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
