Howard County students prepared for walkouts

The walkout lasted 17 minutes to represent one minute for each person killed in a school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14.

Brechner First Amendment Project at the University of Florida, all of this raises important questions about the scope of First Amendment speech rights for high school students. The group plans to meet at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds, which is about 2,000 feet from Coeur d'Alene High School. The email also included vague and ominous threats of punishment if students proceed to walk at the previously scheduled time, which could range anywhere from suspension to detention. The national event is focused on pushing Congress to change federal gun laws. Students who don't want to participate could bring a note from a parent to opt out.

"We want to talk to Smith & Wesson about how they are prepared to be a part of the solution, which includes shouldering the costs that our communities are bearing - both the human costs and the financial costs - of what their product does", she said. Supporters say they represent a realization of power and influence by young people raised on social media who have come of age in an era of never-ending wars, highly publicized mass shootings and virulent national politics.

"Change never happens without backlash", said Kara Litwin, a senior at Pope High School in the Cobb County School District.

Students across the country will walk out of class Wednesday to protest gun violence.

"At 10 a.m., in union with the national walkout, students will walk out of their classrooms for 17 minutes in solidarity with the 17 lives lost in Parkland and then will make their way either by walking, driving or taking public transport to the Statehouse", she said.

Walkout is planned for 10 a.m.

Schools can issue unexcused absences, assign extra work or discipline students who don't adhere to school policy, but non-disruptive, organized protests and walkouts are protected.
