Frustration as 'shambles' 26-30 railcard website crashes

The card, which gives discounted rail travel to passengers aged 26 to 30, was announced by Philip Hammond in his Budget speech in November.

New railcards have gone on sale online, but with only 10,000 available the website is struggling to cope with demand.

This is due to the exceptionally high volume of traffic on the 26-30 Railcard website.

"Due to the unprecedented demand we have been working with our suppliers throughout the morning to further increase the capacity on the website to create a better experience for our customers".

But only 10,000 will be released, meaning around one in 500 people in the age range will have one. Meanwhile, purchasing the railcard over the phone is also proving hard - The Independent has been on hold for more than 40 minutes at the time of writing (with no end in sight).

Others compared getting their hands on a railcard, to the elusive Golden Tickets in Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

However, people trying to buy the national railcard today have experienced problems doing so as the website keeps crashing.

Tom Drury, from London, wrote: "The launch of the new railcard is a shambles".

Aamir Khan to join Instagram on his 53rd birthday
The film has a big star cast including the living legend Amitabh Bachchan , Katrina Kaif and Dangal fame Fatima Sana Sheikh. But with Instagram, his fans will be able to see what is happening in his routine life in the form of pictures.

However, it's not good news for everyone, as the railcard can not be used on season tickets, which many working and commuting young people buy to make daily travel to work slightly cheaper.

The cards costs £30 each year and will allow users to save a third off most fares, although the cost of some peak time travel will not be reduced and no discount will be given on season tickets.

It must be bought online and downloaded on to a smartphone. You must be among the first 10,000 to apply.

And to be eligible, you must be between 26 and 30 years old.

However, a £12 minimum fare applies for journeys starting between 4.30am-10am Monday to Friday, excluding Advance Fares.

Tuesday's nationwide launch follows a trial across the Greater Anglia network, during which another 10,000 railcards were sold. 26-30 railcard will help 4.5m save money on fares by Spring.

The card is meant to be used on a smartphone, but if you lose your phone or your phone dies you can transfer the card to another phone online.
