Tiger Woods second favourite for Masters, shoots up world rankings

The Presidents Cup will get a tremendous shot in the arm Tuesday when Tiger Woods and Ernie Els are named captains for the 2019 matches in Melbourne, Australia, sources told Morning Read.

Els and Woods featured prominently in the event's only draw when they faced each other in a sudden-death playoff in 2003 in South Africa to decide the trophy only to have it declared a tie when fading light forced an end to play after three extra holes.

File this one under "things we never thought we'd see" - Tiger Woods, US team captain.

Woods has been named by Jim Furyk as a 2018 USA Ryder Cup vice-captain along with Stricker and Davis Love 111.

The 2019 matches will be December 12-15 at Royal Melbourne, the latest the Presidents Cup has been played.

Captains alone will not change the outcome, a position that former global captains Greg Norman and Nick Price have expressed.

The Ducks could stay out west and play in Spokane, where coach Kelly Graves spent many years as Gonzagas coach. But the beauty of the NCAA Tournament is that once the games begin, the controversy is forgotten.

The 2019 Presidents Cup will be the 13th match in the competition's history. The Presidents Cup has been reduced to 30 matches over four days, and the format is not likely to change for the next one.

Els, and a victor of four Majors, made his Presidents Cup debut in 1996 and was a member of the only global winning side two years later, and all up, has contested eight Presidents Cups with the last being in 2013. You can sort of put eight guys out and feel you've got a good chance.

With Woods as the captain, has he given up any hope of making the team on his own merit?

Woods will follow Fred Couples, Jay Haas and Steve Stricker as captain of the U.S. Presidents Cup team.

Woods and South Africa's Els are due to be announced as captains on Wednesday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Florida's Bay Hill. The U.S. won 19-11 at Liberty National in New Jersey previous year, boosting its overall record to 10-1-1.

"I keep getting just a little bit better and a little bit sharper", Woods said, per CNN. He's reached out in those team rooms and really been a big part of helping the younger players and being alongside of them and then also helping the captain with some hard tasks and asks and X's and O's.
