Pellegrino sacked: Southampton target Marco Silva as next manager

Southampton fired manager Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday in a bid to stop the team sliding out of the English Premier League.

Pellegrino was sacked by the Saints last night following Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United, a result which made it just one win in their last 17 Premier League games.

"As far as the situation we are in at the moment, I think it makes sense to go with someone who has Premier League experience - who doesn't have to get to know a new set of players".

"The club will look to appoint a new management team as soon as possible, with the search for a replacement already under way".

The sacking of Pellegrino raises questions once more about Southampton's decision to fire Puel last summer.

Assistant manager Carlos Compagnucci and assistant first-team coach Xavier Tamarit have also parted company with the south coast club.

Matt Le Tissier: Mauricio Pellegrino was too negative at Southampton

That salary and likely seven-figure compensation figure would not deter Saints, who face a huge fight to maintain their top flight status.

As The Guardian wrote at the time, Puel "did not fall short of the reasonable expectations that Southampton could have had when they appointed him less than a year ago, he just failed to meet their admirably unreasonable ones".

It is added that former Hull and Watford boss Silva "is not understood to be in consideration" for the post, while ex-West Ham manager Slaven Bilic "is not prominent on the immediate shortlist".

However, prior to this season Hughes had led the Potters to three consecutive ninth-placed finishes and a 13th-placed finish last term, while he is a vastly experienced manager with only five men having taken charge of more Premier League games.

Mark Hughes has been named as the "leading candidate" for the vacant Southampton manager's position, not Marco Silva.
