Federer wins, Djokovic out at Indian Wells

In just his second tournament since Wimbledon past year - his first comeback at the Australian Open in January saw him lose in the fourth round to Hyeon Chung before he chose to go under the knife for a "small medical intervention" - Djokovic looked well below his best as he went down 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-1 to a man ranked 109 in the world.

Federer, who already has two titles in 2018 after victories in Australia and Rotterdam, took the first set 6-3 against Argentina's Federico Delbonis in just under 40 minutes.

In late action, Croat second seed Marin Cilic beat Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 7-5 6-3, while Canadian Milos Raonic defeated 17-year-old compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4 6-4.

Djokovic was makings his first appearance since being stunned by Hyeon Chung at the Australian Open.

He won five titles by the end of the season, including the US Open and Masters Cup and no one could stop him at the beginning of 2007 as well, dominating at both the Australian Open and Dubai to clinch 7 straight titles and win a career-high 41 matches in a row!

The match started after a two-hour-plus delay and the Swiss raced away to bag the first set 6-3 but rain played spoilsport and stopped the game at 2-2 in the second set.

Djokovic is a 12-time Grand Slam champion and former World No 1 but was only seeded 10th here, having taken six months off after Wimbledon previous year and then undergone surgery following a fourth-round loss at the Australian Open.

"For me it felt like first match I ever played on the tour".

"In the night-time, the ball is much more deader".

"It's been a long time since I have been interrupted at night and have to come back the next day", said Federer.

Other seeded players who lost were ninth-seeded Lucas Pouille, who fell 6-4, 6-4 to Yuki Bhambri; 14th-seeded Diego Schwartzman, 7-5, 6-4 to Marcos Baghdatis; 21st-seeded Kyle Edmund, 6-4, 6-4 to Dudi Sela; and No. 24 seed Giles Muller, 6-3, 7-5 to Pierre-Hugues Herbert. "I know how much work I have put into it, and I know what I had to do to get here".
