Man dies of 'self-inflicted gunshot wound' in shooting incident at White House

Washington DC Police said the man approached the White House's fence just before noon local time yesterday before taking out a handgun and firing several shots.

The U.S Secret Service tweeted: "Secret Service personnel are responding to reports of a person who allegedly suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound along the north fence line of White House". Brayman says none of the shots appear to have been directed toward the White House.

The gunman has been identified by the Secret service and the Metropolitan Police Department, but his name has not been disclosed citing security reasons.

The incident prompted increased security at the White House, with reporters being temporarily sent to the basement, according to CBS News.

The incident happened about 12pm local time (5pm United Kingdom time) and the surrounding area was cordoned off.
