5 rescued, 2 injured after avalanche at Squaw Valley

The avalanche hit five people Friday, leaving one hospitalized with a serious lower body injury, the Placer County Sheriff's Office said.

Three people were partially buried after an avalanche at Mammoth Mountain, according to the resort's official Twitter page.

All skiing and riding operations had been suspended earlier in the day after a snowboarder, missing since the previous afternoon, was found dead.

Search efforts were suspended Thursday night due to high avalanche danger in the area where three-feet of snow fell and wind gusts reached 150 miles per hour.

The avalanche hit around 10:15 a.m., officials said.

Two women and three men were eventually rescued from beneath the snow.
