Church of the Holy Sepulchre reopened after 3-day protests

East Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre was reopened Wednesday after a three-day closure in protest of Israeli plans to levy taxes on property owned by churches in the holy city.

"We hereby announce that the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. will be reopened to the pilgrims tomorrow, February 28th, 2018 at 4:00 AM (0200 GMT)", said a joint statement issued on Tuesday night.

Earlier this month, an announcement from the municipality said it would start collecting back taxes worth more than $188 million from some 887 properties in Jerusalem belonging to churches and United Nations agencies.

He told Catholic News Service that the church's 10 Franciscan friars continued celebrated Masses for the intensions of the pilgrims who were unable to pray in the church, where tradition holds that Jesus was buried.

The committee is also slated to look at the issue of Jerusalem land sales by the Greek Orthodox Church.

Church leaders, in closing the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, said church-owned businesses, which include a hotel and office space in Jerusalem, had enjoyed a tax exemption.

"This reminds us all of laws of a similar nature which were enacted against the Jews during a dark period in Europe", Christian leaders said in a statement on Sunday.

Mr Netanyahu's office said that proposed legislation governing the sale and possible confiscation of church lands in Jerusalem was also being suspended. He said some churches has been threatened with confiscation of property if the bills went unpaid, and churches were being charged retroactively for seven years.

The bill would allow certain lands sold by the Greek Orthodox Church to be handed over to the state, which would then compensate those who bought it from the church.

These actions breach existing agreements and worldwide obligations which guarantee the rights and the privileges of the Churches, in what seems as an attempt to weaken the Christian presence in Jerusalem.

Palestinian concerns: Palestinians are concerned the land purchases are created to expand Israeli settlement construction in East Jerusalem, which they claim as the capital of a future state.

The church is located in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians see as the capital of their future state.

During his December 6 speech announcing that the United States would move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, President Trump praised Israel as a country where adherents of the world's three major monotheistic faiths enjoyed freedom of religion.

Local Muslims and Christians have said that such a move could upset the religious balance in Jerusalem.

The decision to close the church was extremely rare.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre has been closed since Sunday in protest.
