Team USA defeats Sweden to win first curling gold medal

With the score deadlocked at 5-5 on Saturday, U.S. skip John Shuster provided some last-rock magic with a pinpoint double take-out for five that left their Swedish opponents stunned as the Gangneung Curling Centre erupted into chants of "USA, USA". He also delivered a huge takeout of two Sweden stones in the 7th end of the gold medal match.

The U.S. team includes skip John Shuster, a Chisholm native now living in Superior, Wis., John Landsteiner and Tyler George of Duluth, Matt Hamilton of McFarland, Wis., and alternate Joe Polo of Duluth.

That final match was a 5-5 tie entering the eighth end (much like a baseball inning) with Team USA having the final shot and a chance at the equivalent of a grand slam home run.

Asked about how he had transformed his "team of rejects" Shuster replied to grins all round: "You haven't said that right, we weren't a team of rejects, just Team Reject!" "I was extremely lucky these incredible guys went along with me".

Team USA, thus far, has nine gold medals, eight silver medals and six bronze medals, for a total of 23 medals.

"I think what I was able to accomplish and come this this week is definitely a story that we can have forever", Shuster said.

Sweden retained the last-rock advantage known as the hammer for the ninth end, and scored two.

United States's skip John Shuster puts his hands near his gold medal, which says "women's curling".

The Swedes were 2-0 up by the second end, but Team Shuster levelled immediately, and went 3-2 up in the fourth end with their yellow stone deemed an infinitesimal amount closer to the tee than Sweden's red. "I have a choice to rewrite my story, to write the story of this team, '" Shuster said.

"It feels nearly unbelievable, but we came out here with great intensity and just had to believe we could do it, and make our shots", said America's Matt "Ham" Hamilton. Switzerland beat Canada in the third-place game on Friday for bronze.
