The line between Airbnb and your average hotel is thinning

Mr Chesky says the program is available now with 2000 homes in 13 cities, providing "all the comforts of home, plus more".

Airbnb launched in 2008 when co-founders Joe Gebbia and Brian Chesky inflated a trio of air mattresses in their San Francisco apartment and turned it into an impromptu bed and breakfast. Starting with 2000 homes in 13 cities available to book right now, Airbnb Plus is intended for guests looking for lovely homes, exceptional hosts and added peace of mind.

Airbnb today announced a new hotel-like tier of service on its platform the company is calling Airbnb Plus.

In August of previous year, Chesky tweeted that Airbnb had listings for 15,000 boutique hotels, about 10 months after introducing them to the platform. You might find several rental units in the same building, or of the same configuration, all by the same host. that's nearly like a kind of faux hotel system, but this will offer an opportunity for Airbnb hosts to differentiate themselves for users that are looking for something more specific.

Users now have the choice of three property types - shared space, private room and entire home.

The Airbnb Host Community is broad and diverse with more than 4.5 million places to stay around the world.

Beyond by Airbnb is a standalone site based on the company's acquisition of Luxury Retreats in 2017. Airbnb said it's adding these new listings so that people will have more options to choose from to best match their preferences.

"Ten years later", says Chesky. The platform will also offer curated collections of homes for the family (homes that come with toys, books and games consoles), work, honeymoon and group travel. The Luxury tier, called Beyond by Airbnb, is built around whole trips including hospitality, custom experience and - of course - higher-end homes. Plus homes are inspected for 100 total areas of interest including cleanliness, comfort, and design.

The expanded offering will ruffle the feathers of some corners of the travel industry, particularly as the platform will significantly undercut the commissions taken from hotels by sites such as Expedia and Booking.com.

Today during a press conference in San Francisco, the company announced that in an effort to truly include opportunities for everyone they will add four new property types, new property collections for themed travel, and new tiers to categorize homes based on customer appeal. The Superguest trial launches with 10,000 people this summer before being rolled out to all guests later in the year. "Groups that provide mass-produced hospitality, who don't offer belonging, who don't' care about what we care about - they don't meet our standards, and they find somewhere else to do their business".

Anticipation has been growing over when Airbnb will go public, but CEO Brian Chesky told USA TODAYthat it would not launch an initial public offering in 2018.
