Team USA Scores Olympics Women's Hockey Gold But Ratings Hit Near Low

(The details of each of these accomplishments, to my point, fades with time; they are all celebrated.) Late Thursday afternoon in Korea (early Thursday morning in the eastern US, as the dramatic USA-Canada women's hockey game was unfolding more than an hour away), Shiffrin won her silver medal in the Alpine combined, one run of speedy downhill followed by one run of twisting, technical slalom, with the victor determined by total time.

Meanwhile, Shiffrin salvaged her Olympics with her second medal after winning gold in the giant slalom.

This slalom portion of the two-leg Alpine combined would be the first - and only - time Vonn, 33, and USA teammate Shiffrin, 22, would compete against each other at any Olympics.

But late Thursday afternoon, as an approaching snowstorm cast a shadow over her, Vonn stood in the start house for nearly certainly the last time at the Winter Games with a chance to join Shiffrin on the podium - even, possibly, to grab the gold medal and push Shiffrin, sitting in second place, to the bronze.

Holdener, who was almost three seconds down on Vonn after the downhill, skied into the gold medal position on her slalom descent. She's the first American to win gold and silver in alpine events at the Olympics since 1952.

She is 33, the oldest woman to ever win an Alpine medal at a Winter Games.

Freestyle skier David Wise successfully defended his gold medal Thursday, breaking through on his final run to give the US its third gold medal in the halfpipe at the Pyeongchang Olympics. She finished 0.74 seconds ahead of Ragnhild Mowinckel, the Norwegian skier who had edged ahead of Vonn for the silver medal in the individual downhill event. For me, it is huge to know that I can now put down fast times in pretty much any event and contend for medals in multiple events.

Vonn, barring what she's called a medical miracle, won't be back for any future Olympics.

The result leaves Shiffrin with two medals from these Games after her gold in giant slalom.

N Korea blasts Pence following reports of canceled secret meeting
Pence had been scheduled to meet Kim Yo Jong before the North Koreans canceled the meeting at the last minute, US officials said. The opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics was attended by Kim Jong-un's sister Kim Yo-jong, who is also blacklisted by the US.

City Officials: Car Crash Into Hospital Was Intentional
There were approximately 30 patients and 20 staff in the emergency department at the time of the crash, said a hospital official. The hospital has canceled non-emergent surgeries and outpatient radiology tests that were scheduled for Friday.

"It's been a mental roller coaster", Shiffrin said.

"I wanted to go out guns blazing and I did", she said.

The 22-year-old skiing sensation will not have her boyfriend by her side tonight. "Of course, I'd have loved a gold medal but, honestly, this is wonderful and I'm so proud".

What happened was, Shiffrin finished in second to take the silver.

"After wining two gold medals there is no pressure at all", said Hirscher who, with 55 World Cup wins, is second only to Ingemar Stenmark's 86 on the men's all-time list.

"I wish I could keep skiing and I wish my body doesn't hurt as bad as it does", she said.

Faivre was sent home earlier this week after comments he made following his poor performance in the Super-G event. She knew that, but she didn't have an easy time processing it.

"It was definitely helpful just to have a day where I wasn't mentally stressing about running this track or doing everything right", Shiffrin said about skipping the downhill. I tried to believe that one day it would come to me. Vonn was first and Shiffrin entered the afternoon slalom, her forte, in sixth place. "You don't realize the amount of every single thing she's done every day for the last eight years has been for this day and that 2 minutes", said Vonn's sister, Karin Kildow. "I think it was a smart decision on her part". Shiffrin is the best slalom skier in the world and an improving downhiller.
