Shock as Gov Gaidam recants rescue claims of abducted Yobe school girls

Governor Gaidam, who was at the Palace of the district head in Dapchi town to console parents and residents over the unfortunate incident, said there was no established case of abduction of the school girls.

However, their hopes seem to have been dashed when the governor sadly made a U-turn on the reported releases regretting that the state government was misled by a false information on the pupils' whereabouts.

Police and state officials said on Wednesday that there was no evidence that the girls had been abducted, though the Yobe government later said in a statement that the military had rescued some of the students from Boko Haram.

The families of dozens of girls who have been missing for several days after a Boko Haram attack on their school in northeast Nigeria Thursday waited anxiously for their return after the state government and military said some had been rescued. Other students and teachers were able to escape the attack and flee into the surrounding brush, according to a statement from Yobe State government spokesman Abdullahi Bego.

About 50 girls have been missing since Boko Haram extremists attacked a village in northern Nigeria that has a girls' boarding school, provoking fears they may have kidnapped like those from the town of Chibok almost four years ago.

Boko Haram horrified the world when it abducted 276 girls from a boarding school in Chibok nearly four years ago. Some of the girls managed to escape on their own, while others were later rescued or freed following negotiations. The group, which seeks to establish an Islamic state, has spread its terror across Nigeria's mountainous borders over the years into Niger, Chad and Cameroon, all of which surround the Lake Chad Basin.
