Vonn's Olympic downhill farewell is a lovely shade of bronze

Lindsey Vonn, one of the great alpine skiers of all time, was unable to repeat her downhill victory in the 2010 Olympics in a title defense eight years in the waiting on a sun-splashed Wednesday afternoon in Pyeongchang.

Goggia, the World Cup series leader this season, won by 0.09 seconds from Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel as Vonn of the United States took bronze.

Starting 19th in the field of 39 skiers, Mowinckel knocked Vonn from the silver position to bronze, finishing in 1:39.31. The 21-year-old Klaebo became the fourth man to win three golds in cross-country skiing in a single Olympics as well as the second athlete to win both the individual and team sprint in the same games.

Shiffrin posted the fifth-fastest time in Tuesday's third and final downhill training run, but insisted that while the schedule change was "not ideal", she had no regrets. The record was held by Austria's Michaela Dorfmeister, who was just shy of her 33rd birthday when she won the downhill and the super-G at the 2006 Turin Olympics.

Starting seventh in the field of 39 racers, Vonn hit speeds of almost 70 miles per hour as she scorched down the mountain.

"I'm so proud to have competed with such unbelievable girls", the 33-year-old said.

While Vonn entered the race as a strong podium candidate, she was not necessarily the race's overwhelming favorite, which is still an unusual feeling. Here are some highlights to watch from the Olympics in Pyeongchang on Wednesday.

The Canadian women came just a hair behind the United States in the bronze medal race of women's team pursuit speed skating.

And the American has one remaining event, Thursday's combined, which features one downhill run and one slalom. "So it means a lot, and to be here with this group of girls and to be with them all year has really been an honor".

She'd dedicated the Pyeongchang Games to her grandfather, Don Kildow, who died last November at the age of 88 - which only added to the emotions she carried with each trip down the hill.

"I'm preparing for the four-man bobsleigh with a fresh mindset", Won said. I struggled to try to keep the emotions together, but I left it all on the mountain like I said I would.

The four-man bobsleigh competition wasn't an event that many South Koreans expected a medal. I'm not defeated. I stand by my values and I'm not going to back down. "But I'm proud of my performance".
