Congress, Trump not doing enough to prevent mass shootings

A majority of people are blaming Congress and the President for not doing more to prevent mass shootings, like the one in Florida last week.

The Washington Post-ABC News poll found that 77% of Americans do not think Congress is doing enough to stop mass shootings, while 62% don't believe Trump himself is doing enough.

Roughly 62% of those polled, including almost 30% of Republicans, said that President Trump is not doing enough to stop shootings such as the one carried out by 19-year-old former Marjory Stoneman Douglas High student Nikolas Cruz against his ex-classmates.

The poll was conducted by telephone from February 15 to February 18 and surveyed 808 adults.

The White House on Monday said Trump, who ran on a pro-gun platform during the 2016 election, would support tougher background checks for gun buyers.

It has a plus/minus 4 percentage points margin of error. He has expressed some support for some changes to the gun background check system, which could open the door to a bipartisan congressional proposal created to improve the sharing of mental health and criminal record information between state and local agencies and the federal background check database.

President Trump blamed the FBI and the Russian Federation investigation for the shooting, but also said he supports changes to the background check system.

According to the poll, gun control was a divisive topic across party lines. Fifty-eight percent say say stricter gun control laws could have prevented the shooting.

Support for an assault weapons ban saw the widest gap in party affiliation - with 83 percent support among liberal Democrats and just 26 percent support among conservative Republicans.

Any gun laws aimed at restricting rather than increasing gun access face a mountain of opposition on Capitol Hill, with GOP lawmakers backed by the National Rifle Association asserting Second Amendment liberties at any regulation.
