Rep. Joe Crowley: House Dems not whipping votes on pending budget bill

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi spoke out against it in a marathon 8-hour speech, a House record, vowing to oppose it for not including protections for young immigrants who entered the USA illegally as children.

Senate leaders announced the two-year spending deal on Wednesday afternoon.

Chances of a government shutdown dimmed this week following the Senate deal, but Pelosi's public demonstration indicates a fight could be coming in the House.

A lack of support from House Democrats could imperil an agreement to avoid the second partial government shutdown in a month.

Trump's comments contrasted with the progress made on Capitol Hill, where the House passed a short-term spending measure Tuesday night and Senate leaders were closing in on a larger, long-term pact after a midnight Thursday night deadline. That will force Democrats' hand.

Rep. Eric Swalwell of California said that while he supports a DACA fix, his concern was more about the size of the deal. "And then hopefully tomorrow she will validate that trust by stopping us from voting for it. This is not what the American people sent us here to do", the group said in a statement.

Mr. Crowley, chair of the House Democratic Caucus, said he's not formally lobbying his caucus against the bill, but he is "having conversations" with them about why he feels this way.

"This agreement - which I fought very hard for numerous things that are in there - I think that it's a good bill", Pelosi said during a Capitol Hill news conference. "We as a caucus have talked about making this one of our leverage points and using this as a leverage point".

Dow Jones plunges more than 1000 points
Volatility returned to markets on Thursday as USA indices finished the day sharply lower, plunging them into correction territory. Also Wednesday, U.S. crude oil added 60 cents to $63.99 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

A spokesperson for Ryan, AshLee Strong, said the speaker does not intend to open up a debate on immigration in the House. Some were "understandably upset" about not including DACA recipients and there was "generally a lot of frustration".

Schumer also touted the creation of a special committee that would try to solve a looming shortfall in union pension plans sought by Democrats from Ohio, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and other states. "How are we going to win this?" The Senate is expected to take up the measure next week.

Schumer said he and Pelosi are "working from the same page", appearing to discount speculation that she might oppose the coming pact. "It's not a situation where we can hold all our members".

In a statement on Wednesday, Ryan said he supported the plan and urged other House members to do so. But Ryan said he'll only allow the House to vote on an immigration bill that Trump will sign. "We're continuing to press to be sure that we have an opportunity to address the Dreamer issue".

The government is set to shut down again once funding runs out on February 8, if no budget deal is reached in the House.

Meanwhile, House Democrats along with Pelosi pitched their own $1 trillion infrastructure plan dubbed, "A Better Deal to Rebuild America".

"Our side is not formally whipping on this", the New York Democrat said on CNN. She said that personally, she still needed to study what finally passes but it "likely would promise some big challenges for me". "It is very complex". Anything less will be a vote for funds that could be used to detain and deport Dreamers at the hands of Trump's turbocharged deportation force.
