PyeongChang Winter Olympics' Cultural Olympiad book released

North Korea plans to send a delegation of 500 people to the Olympics, which includes 260 cheerleaders and 24 coaches as well as government officials, musicians and journalists. While South Korea hopes to use the games to improve relations with its rival after a year of animosity over North Korea's rapidly expanding nuclear program, some experts view Kim's overture as an attempt to weaken USA -led global sanctions against the North and buy time to further advance his nuclear weapons program.

The International Olympic Committee has announced that 22 athletes from North Korea will compete at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Seoul will also send skiers to the North's Masikryong ski resort for joint training with North Korean counterparts, and hold a joint cultural event in the scenic Mount Kumgang area north of the border.

The government has focused on the long-term values of striving for unification and expanding inter-Korean exchange through the Olympics, while the other side has argued that the state should not rob athletes who have trained hard for four years of their chance to compete in the Olympics.

Thomas Bach, chief of the International Olympic Committee, said: 'Such an agreement would have seemed impossible only a few weeks ago'. The 2018 Winter Olympics have provided an opportunity that should help the cause and bring peace to the Korean peninsula. She has taken part twice in negotiations in Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South. Hyon is part of a delegation dealing with details of the North's planned activities.

"Pyeongchang Olympics? We oppose Kim Jong-un's Pyongyang Olympics", they chanted, referring to the North Korean capital. And when the joint women's ice hockey team take to the ice for the first time on February 10th, the Korean folk song "Arirang" will be played as their anthem.

"We will focus our diplomatic capacity on inducing North Korea and the US into a dialogue process so that it could create a virtuous cycle of inter-Korean talks resulting in North Korea-US talks", the foreign ministry in Seoul said on Friday, quoted by the Yonhap news agency.

North Korea's involvement comes after months of tension over its nuclear and ballistic missile programme.

North Korea sent a statement on Saturday saying it would send the delegation by a land route on Sunday, and the schedule during the visit could be carried out as previously agreed, the Unification Ministry said in a statement.
