Won't expel sex offender

The university was thrown into the controversy after a B.C. judge on January 4 sentenced the man to 90 days in jail for a single count of sexual interference involving a 13-year-old girl, but also ruled he can serve the remainder of it starting May 4, after finishing his semester at the U of C. After their in-person meetings, he reportedly began asking for nude photos, which he used to threaten her into keeping their relationship a secret.

The university confirmed that Neurauter could return to campus in the fall, but no decisions have been made and his future as a student is still being assessed.

University Provost Dru Marshall said the situation is complicated and hard, but the crime took place before Neurauter was enrolled as a student.

"Nobody has stood up and said no, during the whole thing - there was not one time where the judge or even the Crown said 'please, this is not right.' The victims are the ones who have been paying over and over, every time we went to court".

Kaitlyn Casswell started an online petition to expel Neurauter from the university.

According to CBC, the university said it is reviewing Neurauter's status.

More than 40,000 people have signed an online petition calling on the University of Calgary, in Alberta, Canada, to expel Connor Neurauter, 21.

The University of Calgary's Consent Awareness and Sexual Education Club called the punishment Neurauter received shameful.

However, the statement goes on to state that Neurauter isn't now on campus.

The school's policy on sexual violence says students and staff "alleged to have perpetrated sexual violence may be subject to the University's administrative processes and discipline systems in addition to the civil or criminal legal system".

"It discourages victims from coming forward as perpetrators are accommodated and their actions are excused for the sake of not impeding their 'potential'".

"They're saying they're concerned for him having a successful educational experience and that they won't be able to keep him safe".

The victim's mother wanted Neurauter expelled from the college.

"This is a product of a culture that we live in that doesn't tend to respond adequately to acts of sexual violence", she said.

In interviews with Postmedia and CBC News, the victim's mother said Neurauter was given special treatment by the courts throughout the trial and that it's unfair he has the opportunity to finish his semester before going to jail.

Officials say that Neurauter hasn't been at the campus since January 9.

"He's very upset. He's trying to deal with it and work through it".

She said there's nothing unusual about a court allowing an intermittent sentence and her son was not treated differently. "And if there is, then there's a pretty high responsibility on the school to do something that would minimize that risk for everyone", he said.

U of C student and former sex assault victim Mandy Gillis said she's alarmed that the university is allowing a convicted sex offender to finish his studies on campus.

Neurauter's parents encouraged their son to take the plea bargain that included the delayed sentence, Susan Neurauter said, but added that she regrets it now that she's seen the reaction.
