Trump reluctantly grants sanctions waivers to Iran, keeps USA in nuclear deal

The Islamic Republic's foreign ministry said in a statement that it would not "move beyond its commitments" to the existing agreement, to which Trump has extended the U.S. commitment for another 120 days, Iran's state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported on Saturday.

Rubio issued a statement recommending that Trump should "impose new sanctions against elements of the Iranian government, including the Central Bank of Iran and other Iranian banks, that are involved in or facilitating the regime's human rights abuses against Iranian protesters, its ballistic missile program, or its support for terrorism".

Iranian officials blasted President Donald Trump Saturday for threatening to pull out of the 2015 nuclear deal if the terms of the agreement aren't up for discussion.

"This is a last chance", he added. It prevents Iran from developing nuclear weapons while offering sanctions relief to allow the Islamic Republic to participate in global commerce and banking. Under the current deal they are set to expire in 2025.

As the tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to rise, a senior Iranian official said that his country will continue to develop ballistic missiles.

Mr Trump said United States law must tie long-range missile and nuclear weapons programs together, making any missile testing by Iran subject to "severe sanctions".

A senior American official said that one of the main issues Trump wants to see addressed is the "sunset clause" of the nuclear deal, which ends some of the restrictions put on Iran's nuclear program within ten or fifteen years of its signing date.

Steve Bannon quits Breitbart News
Some of the findings were known, like Trump's insistence that the infamous Billy Bush "Access Hollywood" tape was altered. Bannon's ouster from Breitbart is just the latest chapter in the rise and fall of the unlikely Washington character.

The violent street protests that have spread throughout much of Iran in recent weeks seemed like effective pretext for Trump to reimpose sanctions, since he could argue that Iran's sclerotic regime was on its last legs, and that the USA had even less reason than normal to prop it up.

Iran promised a strong reaction to the sanctions, which it said violate global law and prior USA commitments.

He also called on Iran to stay calm and continue to fulfill obligations under the deal.

However, he said it would be the final time that economic sanctions would be waived by the USA, although the deal's European signatories - the UK, France, and Germany, alongside Russian Federation and China - reaffirmed their commitments. And if at any time I judge that such an agreement is not within reach, I will withdraw from the deal immediately.

On October 13, 2017, the USA current President Donald Trump refused to confirm Iran was implementing the nuclear deal.

Even though Mr Trump has now imposed a 120-day deadline on his European partners, it does not appear like they have the appetite to negotiate a follow-on agreement regarding Iran.
