Nigel Farage's MEP salary slashed to recoup 'misspent' funds

NIGEL Farage has warned that the historic Brexit vote could be dramatically overturned - because Leavers have stopped fighting their corner.

The British daily The Guardian reported on Friday that auditors found that Farage past year had used his parliamentary allowances to pay an assistant who was actually working for his party in Britain instead of doing parliamentary work in Strasbourg.

The investigation found that Christopher Adams, besides being Farage's personal parliamentary assistant, was also carrying out work for the Euroskeptic party as its national nominating officer.

However, his pension as an MEP is understood to be worth £73,000 per year and he will also be entitled to a transitional allowance of £117,000 when Britain leaves the European Union next year. Two other investigations into Ukip MEPs were closed without any action. Helmer, who gave no explanation of his decision to stand down halfway through the parliamentary term, has always denied wrongdoing.

Mr Farage was defended by the European parliament's Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy group (Efdd), of which he is the chairman. "This allegation is all part of their politically-motivated assault".

A spokeswoman for the European Parliament said she could not officially confirm details regarding Farage's salary. Farage's monthly, pre-tax salary, according to the European Parliament website, is €8,484 ($10,295) per month.

The European parliament has played an unsung role in Ukip's success, giving the party funding and a platform it struggled to get in British elections.
