Chelsea Manning is running for Maryland's Senate

Chelsea Manning, the transgender soldier who was convicted of giving classified information to WikiLeaks, has filed paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission for a U.S. Senate bid in Maryland. Ben Cardin in his party's primary later this year.

President Obama commuted her sentence, and Manning was released from military prison last year after serving seven years.

Former President Obama said the sentence she was given was "disproportionate", but President Donald Trump has labelled her an "ungrateful traitor" who "should never have been released from prison". Cardin is Maryland's senior USA senator, elected in 2006 and re-elected in 2012.

Manning declared in Federal Election Commission filings, dated January 5, her statement of candidacy to run as a Democrat in the 2018 election.

Moyes joins the 200 club in style as West Ham crush Huddersfield
West Ham United boss David Moyes says that he is "glad" to have joined an illustrious list of managers to have won 200 Premier League games.

Cardin is now serving his third term and is up for re-election in November. Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat who won the race to replace former Sen. Paul Sarbanes in 2007, is not considered particularly vulnerable to challenge. His campaign committee has almost $2 million in cash on hand, according to the FEC.

However, if Manning were to succeed, she'd the be the first openly transgender elected to both Congress and the U.S. Senate.

Since her release Manning has remained active on social media, and has continued to discuss issues such as government transparency, free speech and transgender rights. Now it looks like she'll be running for Senate.

When another Twitter user criticized Manning's diatribe on police last week and said "have fun never voting again", she responded that she was registered to vote despite her criminal record: "state of maryland doesnt disenfranchise".
