The friend of a 19-year-old University of Pennsylvania student who was found dead in a Southern California park appeared nervous while speaking with authorities and had scratched up hands and dirt under his fingernails, according to a search warrant affidavit filed by a sheriff's investigator. An affidavit described detectives' interview with that friend who drove Berstein to the park the last time he was seen alive.

On one site, he called the Confederate flag a symbol of Southern pride and not hate, according to the report. Relatives said he was going with a high school friend to meet another person at the park the night he disappeared. Although officials would not say whether he was buried or not, they confirmed that Tuesday's storm helped find his body.

According to the affidavit, Woodward said he left the park, visited a girlfriend and went back to look for Bernstein hours later in the early morning. Bernstein's father, Gideon Bernstein, had also worked with friends of the family to conduct independent drone operations. He said it was from a fight club.

"Revenge is empty", Bernstein's mother, Jeanne Pepper Bernstein, wrote on Twitter after the arrest was announced. He said he then left around 1 a.m. and drove to his girlfriend's house in Tustin and then returned to the park at about 3:40 a.m. after Bernstein still had not responded.

"Nothing will bring back my son so we ask the world to please honor Blaze's memory by doing an act of kindness today - don't wait - do it now", the grieving mom told the Los Angeles Times.

'My only hopes are that he will never have the opportunity to hurt anyone else again and that something meaningful can come from the senseless act of Blaze's murder.

On Jan. 4, two days after Bernstein disappeared, detectives spoke with Woodward again at Borrego Park and noticed that his hands had several small scratches and abrasions, according to the affidavit obtained by the Register.

Woodward also had dirt under his fingernails, which he told authorities was due to falling into a "dirty puddle" while sparring.

At one point, Woodward opened the doors to his rental vehicle and allowed two detectives to look inside, according to the affidavit.

He agreed to be further interviews at the sheriff's headquarters in Santa Ana, where his story "stayed fairly consistent".

Bernstein, a sophomore, was planning to major in psychology and later study medicine, the Orange County Register reported his father, Gideon Bernstein, saying last week.
