Sam's Club Closings 2018: 63 Stores Shutting Down

News 8 will update this story with more information as becomes available.

"On Thursday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin praised Walmart's wage hike during a White House briefing".

But while the praise was pouring in, something else was happening.

It came after a series of reports from local news outlets said some Sam's Club stores were closed abruptly on Thursday, with employees learning of the move as they arrived for work. The store has 110 employees.

The company drew criticism from people on Twitter who objected to the lack of notice about the closings.

Giant retailer Sam's Club is closing stores nationwide and it appears the Edgewood Boulevard store in south Lansing will also be shut down.

Walmart declined to comment when asked by InsideSources.

Sam's Club will convert as many as 12 of the locations being closed to e-commerce fulfillment centers, helping it provide faster delivery of online orders.

Sam's Club, while operating more stores than rival Costco - 650 vs. 518 - has been losing ground to its more successful rival for several years.

"This is a fantastic example of a company just not realizing exactly how quickly information travels", said Ed Zitron, founder of the media relations company EZPR.

The main security guard, who identified himself only as Jim, praised the manner in which employees accepted the hard news that caught them by surprise as they showed up for work or to shop.

Ingraham said Democrats are in "something of a trick bag" with the economy humming and companies giving out bonuses due to the tax cuts.

"They raised the minimum wage because they have to", Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, said. They now have just two.

"We know this is hard news for our associates and we are working to place as many of them as possible at nearby locations", John Furner, president and CEO of Sam's Club, said in the statement.

Other details came out in pieces.

Other customers asked if the pharmacies would re-open.

"We want to thank them", Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said of Walmart's decision.

"Our goal is to place as numerous impacted associates as possible at other Sam's Clubs or Walmart stores", he said in an email. "While pay raises are usually a good thing, this is nothing but another public relations stunt from Walmart to distract from the reality that they are laying off thousands of workers and the ones who remain will continue to receive low wages". If you can manage to get credit for something you needed to do anyway, so much the better.

"The pressure is out there to get better employees because other states have already raised the minimum wage, and the demand is really high for workers because the economy is growing", Luther told KDKA money editor Jon Delano on Thursday.

And hey, as both a worker and a shareholder, that makes me happy.

"We love it here", said mother and daughter Anjali Giare and Santwana Giare of Prescott Valley who were caught off guard with the news that the store will soon be a retail memory. But he agreed that Walmart should have led with the store closures, and discussed the raises and bonuses later.

Labor advocacy groups called the pay increase a "big win" for employees, but said it fell short of providing a living wage in many parts of the country.

"The result is a vacuum", he said, "and what fills a vacuum is anger and rumors". Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said, "Tax reform gives us the opportunity to be more competitive globally and to accelerate plans for the U.S".
