Rafa Benitez says Newcastle talking with agents over transfers

Rafa Benitez says Newcastle talking with agents over transfers

With the club's takeover looming in the background, Benitez still hasn't been told how much - if any - money he has to spend.

Asked about transfers and a conversation last month with Ashley, Benitez said: "We are working on that, but there is no news at the moment".

"We are talking with agents but can not push too much".

"We were talking about different players, and I talk with Lee (Charnley, Newcastle's managing director) every day".

He remains hopeful of making two or three additions before the window closes at the end of the month, although he has had to downgrade his ambitions markedly since the turn of the year.

"If someone would come in and could buy, then we would have extra money to go into the market but we don't want to sell anyone who has value for our team".

"We are trying to move forward".

There's a stand-off, of sorts, and Benitez's patience is wearing thin. Players who are not playing and everybody knows about, maybe they would be available.

So why the delay?

But the billionaire, we also know, is a gambler.

Benitez doesn't want to take any chances.

The Spaniard is likely to be frustrated with his side's lack of movement so far but it seems that's set to change this weekend, with The Daily Mail stating yesterday that Newcastle will open talks with Yannick Toure in the next 24 hours.

One thing that Benitez did stress was that he didn't have to sell to buy, though there will be some movement out of the club this month. "If I am waiting for players to come, and it is very hard to bring the players that you want, then you can not sell the players that are already playing and - more or less - doing well".

Rafa Benitez said back in December that ideally he wanted all new signings to be completed by 15 January and failing that, by 20 January at the very latest.
