MSNBC's Chris Matthews Joked About Drugging Hillary Clinton

MSNBC host Chris Matthews apologized Friday after video footage surfaced showing him making a racy joke prior to an interview with Hillary Clinton.

MSNBC "Hardball" host Chris Matthews joked about giving Hillary Clinton a "Bill Cosby pill" before interviewing her in footage from January 2016 obtained by the Cut.

Jennifer Palmieri, the Clinton campaign's communication director and a longtime Democratic operative, said watching the Matthews tape "makes me feel ill". "I deeply regret it and I'm sorry", he said. "Precious waters?" As he waits for the water, he says, "Where's that Bill Cosby pill I brought with me?" That statement, caught by a hot mic, likely referred to the many allegations that Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted women. He has a long history of making disparaging comments about Clinton.

Surrounded by a slew of staffers, the "Hardball" anchor asks, "Can I have some of the queen's waters?"

Prior to their chat at an Iowa fire station, Matthews was recorded joking about in a way that made light of both Clinton and sexual assault.

In December, conservative news siteThe Daily Caller reported that MSNBC paid out $40,000 to one of Matthews former assistants to settle a sexual harassment complaint from 1999. "Runway walk?" Matthews could be heard saying.

The MSNBC spokesman said that they thoroughly reviewed the situation at the time and that Matthews received a formal reprimand.
