Man confesses to a 1993 homicide of a California teen

Forty-four-year-old Brian Keith Hawkins turned himself into California police on Tuesday over an unsolved cold case murder-from 1993. The 19-year-old's skeletal remains were found in rural Northern California months after the auto he'd been driving was found mysteriously abandoned in a Costco parking lot in Redding. "I know the wrong can't be changed but this is the closest I can come to doing the right thing".

All three suspects were taken to jail by the Shasta County Sheriff's Office.

After the interview was over, the TV station informed Redding's chief of police and the Shasta County Sheriff's Office that Hawkins was on his way to confess to a crime.

Immediately prior to giving himself up to authorities, however, Hawkins was confessing to the crime for the first time at Sinclair Broadcasting's KRCR in Redding, California.

In his interview with KRCR, Hawkins refused to answer specific questions about the murder, but said finding God was what led him to confess. "Almost every minute of every day has been a nightmare".

Hawkins, Shanna Culver and Curtis Culver were booked on charges of murder and are being held at the Shasta County Jail.

Investigators learned quickly that Hawkins and the Culver siblings were acquainted with McAlister and may have been the last people to see him, having claimed that he dropped them off at a park in Redding on the day McAlister went missing, the complaint says. When he arrived, Curtis Culver and Hawkins stabbed him to death.

Redding Police Captain Eric Wallace said multiple investigators took on the case over the years, trying multiple leads-with little to show for all their work. Hawkins continued, saying that there hadn't been a moment where he hadn't been remorseful for what he had done. Before he made it, however, McAlister's dad died, he said.

While he didn't share details of what happened that night with KRCR, police later released a statement, according to Fox News.

During their interviews with police this week, Hawkins and the Culvers gave different accounts.

Wallace told the station one of the Culvers also confessed but did not want to say which one.

Hawkins claimed Curtis Culver, who was 21, stabbed McAlister inside the auto, and that Hawkins later stabbed McAlister outside the vehicle, the complaint says.

Hawkins confessed to the murder of 20-year-old Frank Wesley McAlister, and named 46-year-old Shanna Culver and her brother 45-year-old Curtis Culver as accomplices. Police arrested the Culver siblings on Wednesday in Red Bluff, officials said.

During the interview with the TV station, Hawkins shed tears and appeared shaken. "By the time I got there, his father had passed away", said Hawkins.

Hawkins was arrested after his confession.
