Loeb wins Dakar fourth stage, Sunderland out injured

Frenchman Sebastien Loeb claimed his first win of the 2018 Dakar Rally in Tuesday s fourth stage as Peugeot swept the podium in San Juan de Marcona, while Britain s Sam Sunderland was forced to end his defence of the bikes title through injury.

He got going after nearly half an hour at a standstill, but his Peugeot was soon stuck again and lost another two hours waiting for assistance.

In the vehicle category, Team Peugeot Total's Stephane Peterhansel and Jean Paul Cottret increased their gap at the top by winning the fifth stage.

Loeb finished one minute 35 seconds ahead of teammate Carlos Sainz on Tuesday, and he was more than three minutes in front of compatriot and defending champion Stephane Peterhansel, reports Xinhua news agency. "We got stuck once and managed to get going again".

With the WRC legend ruled out, his Peugeot teammates Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz were left standing as the two frontrunners in the vehicle class, and it was the former who bolstered his chances with a strong time through Wednesday's test.

Ten Brinke is 1:15:16 behind Peterhansel.

Ten Brinke finished Stage 5 third, only 4m32s behind Peterhansel. He wasn't alone, however, as numerous top drivers lost time in the same area.

De Villiers posted the third-fastest time on the stage, about five minutes ahead of Sainz, despite suffering a puncture mid-stage. "We had two flat tyres at the beginning and afterwards we took care because we didn't have any spares", al-Attiyah told the Dakar website.

Cyril Despres (Peugeot) and Nasser Al-Attiyah (Toyota) lost their places in the top three to Loeb and Sainz, who is third and around 13 minutes behind Peterhansel, after a awful day in the Peruvian desert.

In the motorbike race, Spain's Joan Barreda Bort of Honda clocked 3:19:42 to win the stage, but Frenchman Adrien van Beveren of Yahama still leads the overall classification despite a disappointing fifth place on Wednesday.

The fourth stage of the rally camped itself in San Juan De Marcona for one more day of dunes and navigation. He gained over 40 positions on his overnight ranking of 98, to finish the stage and overall at 56th place.
