Jeff Bezos donates $33 million to fund college scholarships for Dreamers

- Amazon's Jeff Bezos, the world's richest person, and his wife, MacKenzie, announced Friday that they are donating 33 million to fund 1,000 college scholarships for "Dreamers", according to FOX Business.

The Bezos grant was given to TheDream.US, the nation's largest scholarship program for DACA recipients, as Congress struggles to restore the program.

The money will go to a scholarship fund that will pay for 1,000 illegal immigrant high schoolers to go to college. Each student receives $33,000 over four years to pay for college tuition, fees and books, the organization said.

"He landed in this country alone and unable to speak English", Bezos said.

"With a lot of grit and determination - and the help of some remarkable organizations in DE - my dad became an outstanding citizen and he continues to give back to the country he feels blessed him in so many ways", Bezos said in a statement. Almost 3,000 students are now part of TheDream.US program.

TheDream.US is co-founded by Don Graham, Henry Munoz and former U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez.

It's incredibly inspiring to see someone like Bezos get involved in the fight for justice. The organization didn't hear from Bezos after the initial discussion, but on Wednesday, he confirmed to Graham that he was going to make the gift.

Prior to President Trump's decision to remove DACA protections in September, hundreds of CEOs, including Bezos, signed a letter asking him to keep the program intact and many voiced their disappointment when the president chose to end protections. The tech industry has been an outspoken supporter of DACA and the young immigrants it protects. At the time of publication, Bezos is worth $108 billion.

Bezos has been one of DACA's most vocal supporters.

In a bid to bolster the negotiations, more than 100 corporate leaders this week co-signed a letter to Congress calling for immediate legal relief to dreamers.

According to The Dream.US, this is the largest grant they have ever received.
