Iran: UN experts urge respect for protesters' rights

Russia's United Nations ambassador, Vasily Nebenzia, said the US move to call the meeting was a "bogus pretext" to include "purely political issues" surrounding Iran on the Security Council agenda and said that outside countries should not interfere with the demonstrations there.

Every United Nations member state is sovereign, but member states can not use sovereignty as a shield when they categorically deny their people human rights and fundamental freedoms, the U.S. ambassador said.

Several countries - including USA allies France and the United Kingdom - used Friday's Security Council meeting to defend the nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers.

Khoshroo also said the United States had abused its power as a permanent member of the Security Council by calling for a meeting to discuss the protests.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley called on Tehran to allow peaceful demonstrations.

"The real reason for convening (the) meeting is not an attempt to protect human rights or promote the interests of the Iranian people, but rather a veiled attempt to use the. moment to continue to undermine" the Iranian deal, he said. It began with a passionate denunciation of Iran's "oppressive government" by the United States ambassador Nikki Haley.

Russia's United Nations envoy Vassily Nebenzia asked why the USA is raising the issue when the situation is cooling down.

French Ambassador to the UN Francois Delattre said the protests do not threaten worldwide peace and security, Radio Pakistan reports.

Haley said the global community must also "do more" to prevent Iran from silencing protesters' messages, particularly by blocking some social media platforms.

Putin slams drone attacks on Russian military facilities in Syria
Russian Federation said that the drones required sophisticated engineering and targeting help that originated outside of Syria . That's something Russian Federation and other governments are becoming very aware of.

Hundreds carried out demonstrations in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Germany in support of Iranian protesters facing repression from the government in the past two weeks.

While the U.S. and its European partners - including the United Kingdom, France and Germany - all fundamentally support the right of Iranian demonstrators to peacefully protest, they disagree in their analysis of where the situation on the ground is headed and over the strategic value of ramping up the rhetoric publicly, sources have told CNN.

"Human rights are not the gift of governments, they are the inalienable rights of the people themselves ..."

Countries such as China also criticised the move, with the French ambassador saying the protests did not pose a global security risk in an apparent rebuke to the US. Authorities say the anti-government protests are waning. She said the global community must also "do more" to prevent Iran from silencing protesters' messages, particularly by blocking some social media platforms.

"If we are not careful, we will end up surreptitiously rebuilding an "axis of evil", Mr Macron added, referring to a comment by former United States president George W. Bush, who used the term to describe the "rogue" regimes of Iran, Iraq and North Korea.

Russian Federation claimed that the United States was abusing its power as a permanent member and meant to use the protests to undermine the Iranian nuclear deal signed in 2015.

Thousands of government supporters, meanwhile, staged rallies in Iran for a fourth day yesterday in a show of support.

Mr Trump has also repeatedly threatened to decertify the landmark worldwide deal to curb Iran's nuclear programme, a move which could cause the 2015 accord to unravel and that has been bitterly criticised by other signatories, including France.

A day after Iran and the global powers announced the deal, former President Barack Obama conceded Iran would likely use sanctions relief funds linked to the pact to fund its terrorist proxies, namely the Lebanon-based Hezbollah, which is known to operate in the United States' backyard, Latin America.
