A group of congressional leaders from MA visited Puerto Rico Friday for an update on Hurricane Maria recovery efforts.

Now many hospitals are only getting half or two-thirds of what they order, and have only a few days' worth of saline on their shelves.

Erin Fox, who tracks nationwide drug shortages and heads the University of Utah health system's drug information and support services, said its hospital system now has five to eight pharmacists a day working on nothing but managing shortages.

"We've been able to substitute giving medicines through a syringe instead of through an IV bag", said Dr. Paul Biddinger, Director of the Center for Disaster Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Franciscan also says other hospitals and smaller care facilities are calling them for help.

"Things will be a little bit different, but they should not see any change in their care", she said.
