Trump Administration Exempts Florida From Offshore Oil Drilling

"I don't want your kids ever to fight on foreign shores for a resource we have here", said Zinke after the meeting with Scott. "I support the governor's position that Florida is unique and its coast is heavily reliant on tourism as an economic driver. As a result of discussion with Governor [Scott] and his leadership, I am removing Florida from consideration for any new oil and gas platforms".

As for Republican opponents, many are governors of coastal states who share concerns about the damage major spills can do.

"As a result of our interest in making sure that there's no drilling here, Florida will be taken off the table, "Scott said January 9th, after meeting with U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke in Tallahassee".

"The Trump administration, through their decision on Florida, has admitted that offshore drilling is a threat to coastal economies and tourism", N.C. Gov. Roy Cooper said. Commissioners voted unanimously to add their support to a growing chorus of Florida communities, representatives and lawmakers to push Congress to permanently ban drilling off the Florida coast. They rightly fear an oil spill that would cripple the multibillion-dollar coastal tourism economy that sustains much of the state, particularly Sussex County. We don't even quibble with Scott's pitch to take Florida out of it.

Nelson, expected to face a re-election challenge this year from Scott, said he sent Zinke a letter Wednesday raising numerous questions, including just what exactly is off the table.

"Securing reliable sources of energy helps fuel other industries like tourism, especially in states like Florida that relies on more than 200 million barrels of gasoline and diesel each year to fuel its economy".

Has the Trump administration already forgotten that horrific scene?

On his campaign website then, Scott called for more drilling offshore but said that the state's beaches must be protected.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke last week unveiled a proposal that would roll back offshore drilling restrictions and open dozens of sites for potential leases.

South Carolina Governor, Henry McMaster, is also in opposition of this proposed expansion.

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., took to Twitter on Tuesday, questioning why Zinke has yet to respond to their concerns.

Gov Scott cheered the decision, saying he would "never stop fighting for Florida's environment and our pristine coastline".

"I'm appreciative that the Secretary came to Tallahassee to sit down and talk about it", said Scott.

Democrats and environmentalists have accused Zinke of making a purely political calculation in order to bolster Scott, who may run for a US Senate seat now held by Bill Nelson, a Democrat.

Scott was not the only Florida Republican criticizing the proposal last week, with U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, of Longboat Key, calling it "reckless, misguided and potentially catastrophic to Florida".
