Royals' reported mega offer to Eric Hosmer has fans torn

According to USA Today, the Kansas City Royals have offered free agent first baseman, Eric Hosmer, a franchise-record seven-year deal worth a reported $147 million. The seven-year veteran is also quite durable, appearing in 150 games or more five times in seven years.

While the Royals have yet to confirm whether they've extended an offer, USA Today cites a person close to Hosmer.

The 28-year-old netted his first Silver Slugger award in 2017.

The Boston Red Sox opened the offseason with conversations with Hosmer's representatives but opted to re-sign Mitch Moreland instead of entering the Hosmer bidding.

In September, Hosmer said he wasn't sure how his free-agent foray would end but hoped Royals fans would remember him fondly if he landed elsewhere, per John Pepitone of WDAF.

Hosmer is young enough that he can sign with the Padres, endure a couple of losing seasons and still be a big part of the franchise's next winning team.

If he accepts the Padres' contract offer, Hosmer would become the highest paid player in the team's history.

Now, Hosmer possibly could be the difference maker for say the St. Louis Cardinals, who are one piece away from being true National League contenders.

The Royals, however, have viewed Hosmer as their top priority since the start of the off-season, believing a long-term deal for their first baseman could fit within the club's plans for a long-term rebuild. Maybe! The Royals and Padres sure seem willing to do so.

The Royals, though, are set to see a sizable increase in team revenue when their current under-market local television contract expires in 2019.
