Red Cross issues urgent call for blood donations following severe winter weather

2017's hurricanes across the country, as well as wildfires in many states, including California, along with the current wintry weather on the East Coast has forced the nonprofit to cancel 150 blood drives. The Red Cross provides about 40 percent of the nation's blood supply, and now Red Cross blood products are being distributed to hospitals as fast as donations come in. Presently, the biggest necessities are Type O negative and B negative blood donations, as well as blood platelet donations often needed by cancer patients.

The Red Cross also believes the holidays played a factor in recent low numbers.

The Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 donations every day for patients at about 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide. "There are people who other diseases who have blood loss from other diseases, and without these donations they will not survive".

"It's important that people who are eligible to donate come out regularly, make those appointments and keep those appointments", explained Kelly Isenor, spokesperson for American Red Cross CT Blood Services Region.

The Red Cross encourages individuals to make a donation appointment and to complete a RapidPass online health history questionnaire to help speed up the donation process.
