Louisiana's homeless population declines almost 20% since 2016, according to HUD report

CCH completed its own estimate of homelessnsss in Chicago this year using census data that addresses numerous concerns in the report.

In contrast, the HUD report revealed a long-running decline in homelessness continuing in most other regions.

However, the city and county of Los Angeles saw a almost 26 percent increase in overall homelessness since 2016, primarily among people found in unsheltered locations. For every 10,000 people in California, 34 are homeless. A shortage of affordable housing was partially responsible.

The overall homeless figure was down by 13 percent on a national scale since 2010 and the unsheltered number has dropped by 17 percent over that seven-year span, although some changes in methodology and definitions over the years can affect comparisons.

- In Illinois, local communities reported that 10,798 persons experienced homelessness on a single night in 2017, a decrease of 6.8 percent ( or 792 persons ) since past year and a decrease of 25 percent ( or 3,597 ) since 2010.

The number of homeless families, chronically homeless individuals and homeless veterans decreased from 2016.

In fast-growing Seattle, the unsheltered population grew by 44 percent to almost 5,500 over the past two years.

The number of homeless people living in Wyoming spiked in 2011 and 2012, with a high count of 1,813 in 2012.

HUD's national estimate is based upon data reported by about 3,000 cities and counties nationwide.

Opportunities Inc., YWCA Mercy Home, St. Vincent de Paul, Volunteers of America, Family Promise and Voices of Hope 2-1-1 are working together to assess each homeless person, determine their needs and connect them to services needed to find them stable housing.

HUD says more than 4,800 of Indiana's homeless residents were found in emergency shelters or transitional housing and almost 570 were living on the streets.

The overall homeless population in west states of California, Oregon and Washington increased by 14 percent over the past two years, of which the part considered unsheltered jumped by 23 percent to approach 110,000.

- On a single night in January 2017, 864 veterans were experiencing homelessness.

The number of unaccompanied homeless youth and children in 2017 is estimated to be 40,799.
