Willing to extend deadline for linking Aadhaar to services: Centre tells SC

The Central Government has informed the Supreme Court that it is ready to prolong the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar to avail various services and benefits of government schemes, till March 31, 2018.

Attorney General of India K.K. Venugopal tells SCI that a notification in this regard will be issued on Friday.However he said that the extension does not include linking of mobile phone numbers with Aadhaar, the deadline for which is February 6, 2018.

Meanwhile, the apex court will set up a Constitution Bench next week to hear interim pleas seeking stay on Centre's move to link Aadhaar with various schemes and services.

The UIDAI said that the video referred to an order passed by the Supreme Court on August 11, 2015, when it had restricted the use of Aadhaar to just a few schemes. The petitioners had alleged that Aadhaar linking violated their right to privacy and hence the practise be struct down.

It added, "The mandatory requirements of Aadhaar for PAN, bank accounts, welfare programs, and SIM cards have been challenged in the Supreme Court and no stay has been granted".

The attorney general had told the court that no coercive action would be taken against those who do not have the Aadhaar card but are willing to enrol for. The government also said that with the linking of Aadhaar card the people will get benefit of all the government schemes. They said the government could not compel citizens to link their Aadhaar with either bank accounts or cell phone numbers.

The deadline for linking Aadhaar with your bank account and PAN is December 31 and for linking Aadhaar with mobile SIM cards is February 6.

Some petitioners have termed the mandatory linking of the UIDAI number with bank accounts and mobile numbers as "illegal and unconstitutional".

The Apex Court has upheld the linkage of Aadhaar with PAN in the case of Binoy Viswam vs Union of India which mandates Aadhaar for income tax returns and PAN.
