Willie Taggart introduced as FSU's new football coach

Former Oregon and new Florida State coach Willie Taggart said Wednesday he first heard from the Seminoles on Thursday.

Although the pull of going back home to the state of Florida coaching the Seminoles was too strong, some of the OR players took to Twitter to voice their displeasure with the way Taggart handled himself in the time leading up to his departure from Oregon.

Justin Wilcox, a former OR player and Junction City native, would have to leave California after only one season as head coach to return home.

Following Fisher's abrupt departure, it took less than a week for Florida State to find its man. Florida State athletic director Stan Wilcox said Wednesday that he knew right away that Taggart was the one they wanted for the job. "We watched the 'Noles first, then everyone else".

"Things were going really well there in every aspect", Taggart said Wednesday.

Taggart discussed his Palmetto roots, Manatee High football, former head coach Joe Kinnan and neighborhood friend Peter Warrick, who played at Southeast and FSU before an NFL career, during his press conference. We knew he grew up a Florida State fan and that he came from a family of Seminoles. He also said he doesn't see Florida State's 6-6 year as a sign it's in a rebuilding phase - but rather a "realignment".

Leavitt had a more successful run building South Florida with 95-57 record in 13 seasons as head coach, but he was sacked in 2010 after being accused of hitting a player. "We want to have a diverse pool, a broad pool, and we will have that".

"That's a bonus, but that's not where you start because that narrows the pool", Mullens said on the importance of candidates having a tie to the program after getting burned by Taggart.

"This is not a rebuild, it's a realignment. We want to bring people together to win championships", Taggart said. "Excuse my language but we were a bunch of bad asses back in the days. We're going to go out and do something (about it)".

The person says Taggart has called a team meeting to inform his OR players he is heading to Tallahassee to replace Jimbo Fisher. I know I let them down. I apologize. The timing is probably not right, but it's never right when it's time to leave. "I feel bad about that", Taggart said. I wanted to come here and play. "But no matter where I went, the Seminoles were always a part of me".
