Slain ex-Yemeni President Saleh buried without solemnities

The coalition has been striking Houthi positions, hoping that Saleh's loyalists might allow forces loyal to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to return to the capital. The Arab League's general secretariat condemned the Iran-aligned Houthi movement which killed Saleh as a "terrorist organisation" and demanded that the global community view it as such.

There are expectations in Yemen that Maj Gen Saleh will now return to Yemen to lead a battle against the Houthis to take revenge for the killing of his father.

The Saudi-led military coalition backing Hadi's government carried out a wave of air strikes on the capital and warned residents to evacuate areas under rebel control. The Anadolu Agency quoted sources, as saying, that the mortar shell triggered the fire at the embassy premises.

Saleh's forces were key to helping the Houthis overrun Sanaa in 2014, and then much of the north and center of the country.

On Monday, an official from Saleh's party, the General People's Congress (GPC), confirmed reports that the former president was killed by the Houthis.

At least 234 people have been killed and 400 wounded in five days of heavy fighting in the Yemeni capital, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

A video circulating on social media showed fully-veiled women chanting "The people want the martyr's body".

Houthi rebels in Sanaa

The intervention by Ahmed Ali, a former leader of the elite republican guard once seen as a likely successor to his father, gives the anti-Houthi movement a potential figurehead after a week of fighting that saw the Houthis rout Saleh's supporters in the capital.

At least 13 other journalists and media workers are now held hostage in Yemen by armed groups, including the Houthis and al-Qaeda.

On Saturday, Saleh offered to "turn a new page" with the Saudi-led coalition if it stopped attacking Yemen and ended its crippling blockade of the country. The coalition threw its support behind Saleh when he turned on the rebels, and may now back his son.

The analyst also warned that if Arabs do not unite, it will not be odd to soon witness the effects of Iranian intervention, such as the emerging of sectarian conflicts, ethnic wars, and total destruction in other Arab countries. That seems to have pushed Saleh into flirting with the coalition, ultimately leading to the breakdown of the rebel alliance.

The bloody conflict has left impoverished Yemen as the world's leading humanitarian disasters with millions of people facing starvation.

Worldwide aid groups warned today they were losing the ability to reach civilians in Sanaa.
