Putin says Russian Federation will not boycott 2018 Winter Olympics after ban

Russian president Vladimir Putin might not allow any athletes to compete as neutrals, which equates to a boycott.

The Canadian Olympic Committee told the IOC in October to impose "immediate and meaningful sanctions" on Russian Federation.

Earlier on Tuesday, the IOC decided that Russian athletes will be allowed to compete under the designation "Olympic Athlete from Russia" and march behind the Olympic flag at opening ceremonies.

His words didn't prevent Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova from saying Wednesday that the punishment of Russia's Olympic program was an attempt to isolate and weaken Russia, saying its critics had resorted to "Plan B", after the country hosted the Sochi Olympics. "I can't say that the activities of the International Olympic Committee are honest".

The International Olympic Committee Tuesday banned Russian Federation from the 2018 Winter Games in the toughest sanctions ever levelled by the IOC for drug cheating.

The board acted on recommendations by a commission led by former Swiss President Samuel Schmid, who confirmed "the systemic manipulation of the anti-doping rules and system in Russian Federation". But 22 Russian athletes this week appealed at the Court of Arbitration for Sport against their disqualifications from Sochi over their alleged role in the cover-up.

Russian IOC member Yelena Isinbayeva, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the pole vault, came out against a boycott. "Then punish those who are guilty", Putin said.

Slain ex-Yemeni President Saleh buried without solemnities
At least 13 other journalists and media workers are now held hostage in Yemen by armed groups, including the Houthis and al-Qaeda. That seems to have pushed Saleh into flirting with the coalition, ultimately leading to the breakdown of the rebel alliance.

"It is not lost on many clean athletes that Russian athletes who were part of this system may have had no choice but to comply". There were no ideal options, but this decision will clearly make it less likely that this ever happens again.

"They are always trying to put us down in everything - our way of life, our culture, our history and now our sport", Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, wrote in a Facebook post.

"They will compete with a uniform bearing this name and under the Olympic Flag", the IOC said. "There are positive and negative sides", he said.

While all of Russia's track and field athletes bar one and the weightlifting team were banned from Rio, about 70 percent of Russia's original 387-strong squad took part at those Games.

The Canadian government supported the IOC's punitive measures against Russian Federation.
