ICE arrests and removals up in Colorado

The number of arrests made at the United States border has dropped to a 46-year low, according to figures released by the Trump administration.

"Build that wall" was a common chant at rallies in support of Trump, but border crossings are decreasing and US Border Patrol made only 310,531 arrests - a 25 percent decline from the 415,816 in 2016 and the fewest in 45 years, new data shows.

During the 2015 fiscal year, ICE arrested 2,351 people in Colorado and Wyoming and removed 1,156 people. At the same time, arrests along the Mexican border have fallen sharply, apparently as fewer people have tried to sneak into the U.S.

"If you're in this country illegally and you enter this country illegally, which is a crime within itself - let's remember that - and yet you commit a crime against a citizen of this country, you are a priority for arrest", said Homan. But U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, whose officers pick up people for deportation, made 143,470 arrests, an increase of 25 percent.

In September, the Trump administration announced it would end DACA, the Obama-era program protecting some 800,000 immigrants from deportation who were underage when they arrived in the country illegally.

The agency noted a 40 percent jump in arrests from the start of the Trump administration on January 20 to the end of the 2017 fiscal year. But overall removals, which include people apprehended at the border, are lower than a year ago because there simply haven't been as many immigrants entering the country illegally. Securing the border before that happens means that future generations of Border Patrol and ICE agents will have an easier task to tackle.

Overall, the agency reports HSI made 32,958 criminal arrests and seized $524 million in illicit currency and assets after investigating cross-border criminal activity in FY17.

Colorado and Wyoming saw a major uptick in the number of people arrested and deported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the first year of the Trump administration, according to new numbers released by the agency Tuesday. Under Trump's crackdown, federal officers were encouraged to arrest anyone they come across who is in the country illegally. In addition, ICE arrested almost 800 MS-13 gang members - an 80 percent increase from a year ago. And they were up 37 percent after Trump's inauguration compared to the same period a year earlier. But officials insisted the wall was still needed.

Illegal border crossings are also down. Immigration authorities caught just over half of the people who illegally entered the US from Mexico in 2015, according to a report commissioned by the Department of Homeland Security.
