Cubs sign free-agent pitcher Tyler Chatwood for 3 years, $38 million

Chatwood, 27, will make $38 million over the course of the deal with the Cubs.

Chatwood, 27, is 40-46 with two saves and a 4.31 ERA in 130 major-league appearances - including 113 starts - with the Angels (2011) and Rockies (2012-14, 2016-17). Chatwood projects to fill a back-of-the-rotation slot as Jake Arrieta and John Lackey have hit free agency.

Right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood - not Shohei Ohtani - solidified his future by inking a three-year deal with the Cubs Thursday afternoon. He struck out 120 batters in 147 2/3 innings and struggled with his control at times, walking 77 batters for a 4.7 walks-per-nine-innings rate. Montgomery had a 4.15 ERA as a starter and a 2.49 ERA as a relief pitcher previous year. But when you look at his numbers away from Coors Field, he's not too much of a step down.

Chatwood missed all of 2015 because of Tommy John surgery but is tied with Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals for second in the National League in road ERA the last two seasons (2.57).

Chatwood sported a 6.01 ERA and 1.68 WHIP at hitter-friendly Coors Field a year ago, but his numbers on the road indicate the Cubs may have acquired a nice under-the-radar starting pitcher: 3.49 ERA, 1.23 WHIP.

Chatwood has a career 4.31 ERA and 1.49 WHIP.
